2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is Bold Yet Sensible

Following in the footsteps of the 4 Series coupe and convertible models, the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe introduces a new generation for the 2022 model year. Production is set to begin next month, with deliveries coming in early fall.

Compared with its predecessor, the car is 15 centimetres longer, 2.5 centimetres wider and 5.3 centimetres taller. The wheelbase and tracks have expanded, too, while aerodynamics are slightly improved. An aluminum hood and front fenders along with other weight-saving materials result in a lighter Gran Coupe.

Aesthetically, the biggest change is the giant kidney grille up front. Revised air intakes and sharper-looking headlights with adaptive lighting are also notable. The M440i xDrive model (pictured in red) stands out with sportier design cues. A power-assisted rear hatch comes standard, while the glass sunroof stretches 10 centimetres further back than in the previous generation.

Inside, 4 Series Gran Coupe occupants will discover a similar layout to the latest coupe and droptop variants. Headroom has increased in the front of the cabin, while passengers in the rear will enjoy significantly more legroom and knee room.

Sport seats, a sport multifunction steering wheel and an anthracite headliner are standard, while the M440i xDrive Gran Coupe and the 430i Gran Coupe with M Sport Package feature an M leather steering wheel, door sill plates bearing the M logo and M Aluminum Tetragon interior trim. In the rear, the 40/20/40-split seats incorporate a centre pass-through. BMW claims three people can comfortably sit there, but don’t get your hopes too high.

Naturally, connectivity and driver assistance technologies are aplenty. With BMW Live Cockpit Professional, you get a fully digital, 12.3-inch instrument cluster behind the steering wheel plus a 10.25-inch centre touchscreen.

The 2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe returns with a choice of two engines, starting with a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder. Output is now up to 255 horsepower along with 295 pound-feet of torque, allowing 0-100 km/h sprints in six seconds.

For superior performance, bmw consider the turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine, which delivers 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. Triple-digit speeds can be achieved from a standstill in about 4.5 seconds. The M Sport exhaust automotive system that goes with this engine will delight your ears, while the addition of a 48V mild hybrid system will help improve fuel economy (it also provides a temporary boost of 11 horsepower).

All models rely on an eight-speed Sport Steptronic automatic transmission, and xDrive all-wheel drive is standard in Canada. The latter has a rear-biased setup to produce the driving experience expected of a BMW in dynamic situations. The M440i xDrive Gran Coupe also features a Sprint function for more dramatic bursts of mid-range acceleration.

Pricing for the 2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe will be announced at a later date. For the record, the outgoing model started at $53,550.
